Court Appeal Upheld for Microsoft Word

The U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled in favor of Microsoft to continue its sales of Microsoft Word.  The court granted a stay against an injunction by Canadian based company i4i, which stated Microsoft infringed on its patents by using custom XML in both Word 2003 and Word 2007.

As Waves of Tech reported on 12 August (Posting) Judge Leonard Davis of the U.S. District Court in Texas, ruled Microsoft infringed on i4i’s patent. Judge Davis fined Microsoft $280 million and granted an injunction that would have stopped Microsoft from selling Word 2003 and Word 2007 after Oct. 10. Microsoft to stop support of IE6

According to Microsoft they will support Internet Explorer 6 until the year 2014.  As you may know websites Digg.com and Youtube.com are starting their campaign to stop supporting the old browser.

Microsoft says on their IE Blog  “For technology enthusiasts, this topic seems simple. Enthusiasts install new (often unfinished or beta) software all the time. Scores of posts on this site and others describe specific benefits of upgrading. As a browser supplier, we want people to switch to the latest version of IE for security, performance, interoperability, and more. So, if all of the “individual enthusiasts” want Windows XP machines upgraded from IE6, and the supplier of IE6 wants them upgraded, what’s the issue?”

In short Microsoft will continue to support Internet Explorer 6 because they have extended Windows XP support until the year 2014.  Internet Explorer 6 is a part of the operating system and will be supported by Microsoft until XP has expired.

However, here at the Waves of Tech we encourage everyone to upgrade your version of Internet Explorer so you can be as secure as possible or use another browser such as Firefox, Chrome, Opera, or Safari

    Surf safely everyone!
